I owned Motorcycles before 1993, but
had not really taken a cross country trip of any kind, so I really
began Motorcycle Touring when a co-worker sold me his old motorcycle. A
1976 Honda Gold Wing that ran but had multiple problems. I ended
up replacing 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears along with a shift fork in the
transmission. Both timing belts and some electrical parts
including putting in a electronic ignition conversion kit. It had
dual points and it was impossible to detune it enough to run on
unleaded gas.At first I
was apprehensive about taking the old bike on a long trip, but after
riding many miles locally, I decided to take "OLD GOLD" to
California. It did very well and I rode it 24,000 more miles in 3 years.
Note: I sold the old Gold Wing back to the guy I bought it from. He sold it about a year later and the guy promptly wrecked it.
What does all this have to do with a ST1100? My first trip with Old Gold introduced me to the best touring motorcycle in the world. The Honda ST1100.
And so the journeys began...
